Defense act a blowto our civil liberties

On that date last week, both Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins joined the majority in the U.S. Senate and voted to pass the National Defense Authorization Act. As written, the NDAA authorizes any U.S. president to send the military anywhere in the world to imprison U.S. civilians without charge or trial, based on suspicion alone.

Paul is the most sensible and realistic Republican

In this upcoming presidential election, lots of voters are undecided, and, as an independent, I have not hung my hat on anyone's hook yet.

Does LePage have vendetta against Robin Hood?

I thought I had our erstwhile governor pegged. He was from a fictional book called "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. He was Ebenezer Scrooge. Not that he is tight-fisted, but I quote Scrooge: "Tact is a quality I despised!"

Scrooge learned his lesson, will LePage?

Financial priorities of those controlling wealth in the United States are not only a shame but internationally embarrassing. Recent proposals from our governor are a prime example. At the holidays, here we have a follower of Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge learned a lesson, however, will Gov. Paul LePage? Doubtful, but miracles happen. Some third-world countries treat […]

Spending is bad, unless we’re shopping till we drop

Corporations and their lackeys tell us not to elect representatives and senators who spend money. They say that spending is bad. So in order to please these big money donors, thereby getting elected, our politicians start laying off workers. By cutting back on the help, there is an immediate mirage of savings. It now looks […]

Why do we continue to soil our Earth-nest?

M.D. Harmon’s column (Dec. 3) about global warming raises the largely irrelevant issue of whether we are in a natural or manmade period of global warming. I say irrelevant because, while we argue about global warming, our oceans are overfished and chemical fertilizer runoffs create dead zones, and the devastation of our forests leads to […]

Some solutions for solving D.C. gridlock

My solution to the gridlock in Washington, D.C: As soon as the government shuts down, all salaries to senators and representatives shall cease to be paid pending passage of the budget bill. Their staffs will be required to leave their offices until a budget bill is passed. No senator or congress person will be allowed […]

Why is government intimidated by Occupiers?

Why is our government and our law enforcement so intimidated by the Occupy movement? These taxpaying Americans are expressing the right to disagree with people who earn millions of dollars for doing nothing while hardworking, underpaid Americans get taken advantage of. The law in this country is not fair or equal. The United States is […]

Let elected officials do the job we hired them to do

I am more confident than ever that our state government will make the right budgetary decisions. They have noticed from the declining tax revenue that we are all struggling and raising taxes or taking on more debt will only cripple us more. They are aware that we find spending more than we have and robbing […]
