Gay was the eldest of four siblings (Ann Gilbert, deceased, Jeanette Leblanc of Florida, and William Rancourt of China, Maine).

Upon graduating with honors from Waterville High School in 1954, Gay entered the work force and worked a wide range of office jobs.

They celebrated 54 years of marriage and five children, Deborah Carr and her husband Michael, Susan Perry and her husband Colonel (Ret) Warren Perry, James Maheu and his wife Kristen, Vera Maheu, and Robert Maheu and his wife Dawn. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Matthew, Erin, Katie, Michael, and Sam; and four great grandchildren, Dalton, Grant, River, and Margot.
