    RSU 38 budget passage is going to hurt residents

    I hope that the people in Wayne, Mount Vernon and Manchester are proud of themselves for passing the budget for Regional School Unit 38.

    LePage missed chance to be leader on fires issue

    I just read the article about Gov. Paul LePage's reply to the Lewiston man regarding the state's response to the recent fires there. It is my view that the governor's response should have been an attempt to help create a private coalition that would find money to aid the fire victims if he couldn't contribute the actual money from state funds.

    Katz’s energy bill support helps families, business

    As an energy auditor, I see the impact of homeowners and businesses who invest in energy efficiency every day. Energy costs take a big chunk out of Maine peoples' budgets every year -- more so because our housing stock is old and not energy-efficient. Tightening up our homes is the best, most cost-effective way to reduce our energy costs as a state.

    Drivers, horse riders need to keep an eye out

    First of all, thank you to the drivers who slow down for horses being ridden or driven along the road. I would also like to ask the drivers who don't slow down to please do so. It doesn't take long to slow down and proceed with caution and keep everyone safe. Riders should also be courteous to drivers and not ride in the road. If avoidable, stay on the shoulders.

    Maloney: DA’s office knows what it’s doing

    On June 16 Steve Parker wrote a letter to the editor about the Adam Keene day care case, attempting a legal argument about misdemeanor versus felony charges while lacking all the facts. With every open case there is information that we are required to present only to the jury or the judge but I can comment generally on the relevant Maine law.

    Animal cruelty cases must be taken seriously

    The man who shot the black dog 100 times, Aaron Armstrong of Waldoboro, should have a psychiatric evaluation as part of his sentence. People who torture animals often graduate to hurting people. He should also be banned from ever owning an animal of any kind.

    Young people like Ellis need understanding, help

    After five years of working with the addiction population in methadone clinics as a professional drug and alcohol counselor, I can say that Jordan Ellis (19-year-old's overdose highlights growing heroin problem in Maine, June 5) is yet another example of how the current programs do not offer the recovery needed. Maine is 8.5 percent higher then the national average of addicted youths. That statistic is begging for a solution.
