Gays want us to condonetheir immoral lifestyle

In response to the letter by Susan Williamson, (Aug. 23) gay people are not "just like us"; they are different. They have chosen an immoral lifestyle that defies nature in every way, shape and form. They already have the same rights we have -- to find a partner of the opposite sex and get married -- but they choose not to. Gays want us to accept their immoral lifestyle by allowing them to marry, which is nothing more than legalized immorality.

More centrist candidates in open primary system

The Senate race is interesting. Leaving aside the individuals and the personalities, this seems to me a better model, except that we have only one candidate in the middle. The two party candidates represent their respective poles. And, once again, we are in danger of a winner being chosen by a minority.

Value of nature goes way beyond dollar signs

The story in the Aug. 27 newspaper, which praised researchers for placing a dollar sign on the value of the Belgrade Lakes, should be read by everyone. It is also my hope that half of those reading it realize that placing a monetary value on any freshwater lake, or land or air mass, is pure folly. All parts of this natural Earth are priceless, Belgrade included.

Caution to the easy-hearted people who could fall prey to a scammer: The latest scam we have discovered comes from an ad in the classifieds of this newspaper, which, by the way, was made aware of the scam and pulled the ad.

Fairer taxes mean we all can do better together

Sometimes, to hear certain politicians talk, it would seem that taxes are collected on a whim -- as if they don't actually pay for important services that we all rely on. From roads to schools to medical research, taxes are the way we pay for the things we've decided to do together.

Corporate lust produced east-west highway plan

It feels as though a line has been drawn in the sand. As corporate lust for a highway corridor through Maine grows, the mantra of "jobs, jobs, jobs" merely becomes a blanket of platitude obscuring the details of this unprecedented disruption and take-over of peoples' lives and land.
