We need more like Don Brown

Just wanted to add to the story about Don Brown. When I was 5, I would turn him on in the morning 1280 AM. Yup, no FM then. He was out on Northern Avenue at the WABK studio and transmitter site. They had three radio towers in the back field behind the studio and were called the "triple towers of power." I would dare guess that nearly 50,000 kids over the years have glued their ears to the radio early in the morning during winters to hear him say school was canceled. He was truly part of the greater Gardiner area for all of my life and I am approaching 50. He brought moral ethics to the radio waves and was a great part of the community. We certainly need more like him.

Hall-Dale senior’s column was right on the mark

Just want to express my gratitude to a young lady, Helen Call (senior at Hall-Dale), for a well written Maine Compass (June 7) on how Americans don't have proper respect for our veterans' sacrifice.

Reaction to immigration, pot laws a contradiction

Arizona is in violation of the Constitution for enforcing federal laws on immigration? California communities are threatened by federal government for not enforcing pot laws of federal government? What happened to equal under the law?

It’s sheer lunacy to build station next to tracks

Anyone who will choose to build a police station on the blind side of an active railroad track must not have, while in school passed the course Common Sense 101. It is bad enough to have it on a one-way street as it is now, but to compound the issue by also having it on the back side of a railroad is sheer lunacy.

Where were all the marching bands?

Kudos to the Hallowell Community band for being in the Independence Day parade in Augusta. Other than a few really good Christian combos on floats, that was the only band in the parade. I admit it has been many years since I have seen a Fourth of July parade, but it made me wonder, do the high schools not have marching bands anymore? Maybe if the parade had a shorter route there might be a few marching bands with their rousing music in it. Again thanks to all who took part in the parade.

SAD 13 meetingsshow lack of respect

I consider verbal abuse to be disgusting, immoral and unethical. I believe verbal abuse has been normal practice in SAD 13's board room and now in our public budget meetings. It's time to put respect for other people back into public gatherings.

Keschl stays in touch with constituents, their schools

It is my pleasure to write this letter in support of Rep. Denny Keschl. I have had the opportunity of working with Keschl while he has been serving as state representative to two of our RSU 38 communities (Manchester and Mount Vernon). I've also had the pleasure of working with him while he was town manager for Belgrade.

Romney’s spin on health care not supported by facts

In typical Romney-speak, Mitt Romney attempted to spin the landmark Supreme Court decision that allows this country to become the last developed country in the world to guarantee health care to its citizens. The Affordable Care Act will benefit almost all of the 50 million citizens currently underserved by traditional health insurance practices, not just the 2-3 million, according to the CBO, helped by Romney's proposed health care plan. He pledges to repeal "Obamacare." Good luck with that empty "promise."

Society’s insulters should take stock of their actions

A most disturbing situation -- a callous attitude of disrespect -- has become all too prevalent in our nation. It is experienced by elders of our society, by parents to children and vice versa, by drivers of various vehicles (some with booming radios or resonators on exhausts) plus the common use of obscene gestures.
