As the mornings grow crisper and fall color reaches its peak in the mountains, it’s time to start taking advantage.

While Maine forests continue to show off through a changing climate, and as we move toward peak foliage in early October, take advantage of the nice weather and enjoy the vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow peppering the tree line.

From hikes and walks to peaceful drives, here are some of the best places to see autumnal colors.

Mt. Pisgah

The tower trail up Mt. Pisgah, located in Winthrop and Wayne, requires just under a mile of hiking. Your reward? One of the best foliage views in central Maine. Journey among old sugar maples on your way to a 60-foot fire tower last used in 1991. From the top, you’ll get a first-hand look at 360 degrees of views.

Vienna Mountain Road

Vienna Mountain Road offers a plethora of scenery before you’re on your way up the mountain. From there, you’ll have access to plenty of trails. But if you don’t feel like a hike, the drive is well worth the views you’ll see along the way.

Kennebec River Rail Trail

This 6.5-mile path is an easy walk from Gardiner to Augusta with plenty of views of the Kennebec River. Enjoy autumnal scenes along the way, and take a break at the half-way point in Hallowell for a bite to eat or a seasonal drink.

Belgrade lakes

If you want a different kind of foliage view — perhaps one from the water — renting a boat on the Belgrade lakes is never a bad idea. Dress warmly and call any of the boat rental companies ahead of time, and then take in the seasonal view from a tranquil lake.

Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway

This drive will take you nearly 80 miles along U.S. Route 201, through forests and viewpoints for wildlife. Start your journey at the Robbins Hill Scenic Overlook in Solon and take your journey all the way to the Canadian border. Stops in Bingham and The Forks will give you an opportunity to see towns and stretch your legs along the way.

Moxie Falls

Head to Bingham via U.S. Route 201 toward The Forks for a scenic day trip full of vibrant leaves. The journey will take you through Moscow and Caratunk before veering toward Lake Moxie, where you can experience Moxie Falls. To extend that trip farther north, find a recommended route from the Visit Kennebec Valley guide.
