A group of individuals using Tannerite to blow up a vehicle in Readfield last week prompted an investigation from the Office of State Fire Marshall and may result in criminal charges.
The Readfield Fire Department responded to multiple reports of an explosion Sept. 27 at 846 Main St., the location of Hatch Auto Repair, according to a release from the Office of State Fire Marshall. Investigators determined the vehicle explosion was caused by several people shooting at Tannerite placed in the car.
Tannerite is an explosive often used in reactive targets for firearm practice. State law allows the use of up to 5 pounds of Tannerite for sport and target shooting only. It may not be used to explode anything other than the container in which it is mixed.
The investigation is ongoing, but fire marshal investigators are working with the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be brought, the release states.
This is a developing story.
