The slumping University of Maine football team has fired offensive coordinator Mikahael Waters.

Head coach Jordan Stevens confirmed the move Tuesday. Waters had been offensive coordinator for the Black Bears since 2024.

The move comes as a sputtering Maine offense is ranked 118th out of 124 Football Championship Subdivision teams in points per game (14.5). The Black Bears have lost five consecutive games, most recently a 24-16 home defeat Saturday against Sacred Heart.

Waters was in his eighth season with the Black Bears, having joined the staff in 2019 under then-first-year head coach Nick Charlton. He served as Maine’s tight ends coach from 2019-22 and as special teams coordinator in 2023 prior to his promotion to offensive coordinator.

Maine’s offensive struggles have been a theme all season. In addition to their paltry points-per-game ranking, the Black Bears rank 93rd in passing yards per game and 110th in rushing yards per game. The team has just 66 points in 22 quarters since scoring 21 in the first half of the season opener at Towson.

“We have to coach better, and we have to put our players in a better position to make plays, and that’s from a confidence standpoint and from an execution standpoint,” Stevens told the media Tuesday. “When we talk execution, that’s not on the players; that’s on us to make sure they’re in a position to execute.”

Maine’s output in 2026 is a significant drop-off from the previous two seasons under Waters. The Black Bears averaged 24.2 points per game (67th) last year, and 23.2 points per game (74th) in Waters’ first season as offensive coordinator in 2024.

Sean Green, Maine’s running backs coach and a former state title-winning head coach at Portland and Cape Elizabeth high schools, will take over play-calling duties. Offensive analyst Cooper Heisey will take over for Green as running backs coach.

Maine is on a bye this week. The Black Bears will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Oct. 17 when they host Bryant (4-1 overall, 2-0 Coastal Athletic Association).
