Mrs. Romney’s ‘job’ not really an issue
Not sure we should be politically concerned about how hard Ann Romney worked at home raising children but I will add I was lucky enough 60 years ago to be a stay at home mom of five children. It goes without saying that moms like she and I worked hard cleaning house, cooking, disciplining and […]

Grateful to strangers who helped after crash
On Wednesday March 28, I was driving on Route 139 just south of Norridgewock in icy conditions and lost control of my car. I skidded off the road and rolled into some trees, and the car landed sideways. Seconds later, four men came running up and helped me climb up and out of the passenger […]

Former postmaster’s photo should hang in post office
When a devoted employee’s hard work, treating the public with respect and being true to one’s career responsibilities, become so disregarded by her employer, in this case, the U.S. Postal Service? Our former postmaster, Rhonda Clukey, served her small community for 37 years (25 as postmaster) before losing her battle to cancer. Wouldn’t it be […]

‘Right-to-work’ proposalis bad for Maine workers
The so-called “right-to-work” act (L.D. 309), sponsored by Tom J. Winsor, R-Norway, is bad for all Maine workers. L.D. 309 aims to muzzle labor, not union workers alone. It strikes at the heart our right to organize, bargain collectively, have safe workplaces and a decent standard of living for our families. Unions matter. Objectively, unions […]

Today parents, their kids and pets wander down Middle Street and enjoy slides, swings, games and runs throughout the area. I know; I live where I see the colorful collection each day. A […]

Column was reminderon lake protection
Thank you for the Maine Compass feature on the Maine Volunteer Monitoring Program. The important work of this group is noteworthy in its own right. But the article also served as a reminder to think about lakes as a natural resource that needs ongoing protection. Just because there are thousands of beautiful lakes in Maine doesn't mean we should take their beauty for granted. I salute the Volunteer Monitoring Program for its work in protecting Maine lakes.

The earth is 4.5 billion years old. How do you explain the number of cool-downs and warm-ups that had occurred in our atmosphere before the Industrial Revolution of 350 years ago?

Blair’s honor by Colbyan insult to students
When I read that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, will deliver the Colby commencement address, I thought it must be somebody's idea of a joke, that Colby students wouldn't accept such an insult to them and their venerable school.
